A lot of riders tend to adopt the usual consumer attitude when it comes to picking an e-bike. As much as possible we want a good one. And rightly so. Considering their car-worthy price tags, it should be one that will give us our money’s worth. But what exactly makes an e-bike “good”? Is it a model that has a powerful battery and motor? Or is it an e-bike that provides the most comfort or has a lot of helpful features? Perhaps, customer feedback is a better benchmark?

Understandably, the term “good” can be considered too general or broad, because there is a considerable amount of subjectivity that comes into play with that label. But to a lot of experienced e-bike riders, a good e-bike is probably one that manages to provide a balance between the factors said above. If we are going to use this balance as a basis, we can easily arrive at a price range, which can fall between $2,000 to $6,500

Obviously, there are numerous types of e-bikes, making it quite hard to provide an all-encompassing yardstick. Nonetheless, regardless of what type of e-bike you are using, each one practically shares those said common denominators – those factors that determine the e-bike’s quality and, ultimately, the costs.

Type of e-bikePrice range
City e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$2,500 to $4,200
Mountain e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$4,400 to $6,300
Gravel e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$3,400 to $5,800
Road e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$4,750 to $6,500
Cruiser e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$2,250 to $4,900
Commuter e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$650 to $4,900
Trike e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$3,000 to $4,490
Cargo e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$1,100 to $5,500
Folding e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$1,700 to $3,700
Junior e-bikes (detailed pricing guide)$940 to $2,215
E-bikes for children (detailed pricing guide)$250 to $350

This is why we are going to be looking at those factors when we outline the costs of a good e-bike. To provide depth, we will be going for a comprehensive approach. This means we will be detailing what makes a good e-bike for every type available today. This way, you will get a well-rounded overview of prices all throughout the electric bike industry.

Price of a Typical City E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good city e-bikes: $2,500 to $4,200.

Sample List of Good City E-Bikes

Model NamePrice
Ride1Up 700 series$1,695
Specialized Turbo Como 5.0$4,150
OHM Quest$3,399
Trek Verve+ 2$2,499
Enki Billy E-Bike$2,490

A city e-bike is fairly popular because most are readily foldable. The foldability feature usually means heavier weight and lesser battery life, though, which explains why most models are relatively cheap. There are great models that you can also get for $2,500.

Easy E-Biking - women city e-bike rental, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

When looking for good city e-bikes, you do not want to go for power because you have to anticipate city speed limits. Most city e-bikes top at 15mph but there are still those that can achieve the usual 20mph.

If you have hilly spots in your everyday commute, you may want to consider going for city e-bikes that can provide adequate support. Even so, the less powerful motor (compared to more high-performance e-bike) is typically what makes city e-bikes more affordable.

Furthermore, any e-bike that has plenty of features that can up your comfort and safety when riding in an urban setting is a ready winner in our book. Place importance on the brakes, lights, and other components that can boost handling and ensure safety. That said, these features will definitely make your e-bike cost a bit more.

Additionally, a good city e-bike has a decent riding range that can cover your back-and-forth regular commute. For this, it is safe to say that the battery is where all the costs still depend on. Once you decide you want more riding range from a city e-bike, you have to be prepared to pay more for it.

Of course, you probably also want your e-bike to be as lightweight as possible, like how most urban riders prefer them. Since a foldable model may naturally weigh more, going for companies that can offer you a foldable city bike you can also easily lug around is also a gauge of its value.

Price of a Typical Mountain E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good mountain e-bikes: $4,400 to $6,300.

Sample List of Good Moutain E-Bikes

Model NamePrice
BULLS E-STREAM EVO AM 4 27.5+$6,299

Giant Trance E+ 1 Pro$5,565
Scott Genius eRide 920$4,999
Haro Shift i/O 5 2019$4,349.99

When it comes to power, mountain e-bikes definitely give other e-bikes a run for their money. Any mountain e-bike is expected to be able to conquer steep and inclined terrains. This is why if you are looking for a good one, you have to pay more attention to durability, particularly the sturdiness of the frame, battery range, and smoothness when riding and handling.

Easy E-Biking - Peugeot mountain e-bike, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

This is unless you prefer a fast mountain e-bike, for which you definitely have to look at the motor. Bosch and Yamaha motors will cost more. It also would not hurt to confirm how much motor support or torque the mountain e-bike can impart.

Any model that can give adequate support for mountainous terrains while still preventing rough or shaky riding can be considered as outstanding; don’t expect them to sell for pennies, though.

Riders like to have as much riding range as possible when doing any kind of outdoor run on hilly tracks. So this definitely means those mountain e-bikes that can give you at most 100 miles of riding range will cost a lot more.

Still, not all pricey mountain e-bikes exhibit this quality, though. Most bikers will find batteries that can give a maximum of 60 miles per charge as adequate already. Evidently, this depends a lot on the terrain and the average distance that you need to cover.

Additionally, since your mountain e-bike is expected to take a beating, you also have to be mindful of warranty and maintenance. As much as possible, it is better to choose brands that have an established network of dealers so you can easily find parts that need replacement. Tuneups, which are usually done in six-month intervals, would also come at an additional cost.

Price of a Typical Gravel E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good gravel e-bikes: $3,400 to $5,800.

Bulls DAIL-E Grinder$5,799
Raleigh Tamland iE$4,749
Yamaha Wabash$3,499
Easy Motion Rebel Gravel-X$3,399

Gravel e-bikes can rival mountain e-bikes in motor power and durability. What ultimately sets gravel bikes apart is the way they are designed. They need to be able to handle rough, rocky terrain (not just gravel, as their name implies) so you can expect them to have components that serve to ensure this.

Easy E-Biking - Yamaha Wabash gravel electric bicycle, helping to make electric biking

The wider drop bars found in most models need to have certain materials to ensure that they will be able to provide the benefit of better handling when venturing rugged terrain. These bars, as well as gear shifters, are what make gravel e-bike stand out not only in design but costs as well.

Any other feature that mitigates the usual risks (e.g. puncture-proof tires) when riding through untamed or bumpy roads is a pricing factor too. As much as possible, these determine a gravel e-bike’s quality.

A robust motor can be taxing on the battery, so expect models to compensate for this by integrating an equally powerful battery. High-powered and durable are fitting labels for most gravel e-bikes, making them the prime example of what a performance-driven e-bike is all about.

Think of them as juggernauts that you can confidently trust to get you through any kind of terrain. Undoubtedly, this is what makes them a top choice in the market today and a lot of models certainly exhibit this exceptional quality.

That said, like mountain e-bikes you have to be prepared to shell out as much in maintenance to make sure that your gravel e-bike won’t deteriorate too fast. This is especially true if you use it regularly on roads that are less-than-desirable for your average cruiser or city e-bike. Mind you, good models are no exception to this.

Price of a Typical Road E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good road e-bikes: $4,750 to $6,500.

Sample List of Good Road E-Bikes

Model NamePrice
Bianchi Aria E-Road$6,500
Moustache Dimanche 28.7$5,862
Coboc Ten Torino$5,531
Cannondale Synapse Neo 2$4,750

Road e-bikes can be considered milder forms of gravel e-bikes because both are designed to handle generally difficult terrains. Road e-bikes are usually best ridden on bike lanes, though, and uncemented paths. You will find a lot of models with wide tires and, as much as possible, you should opt for them if you want to use your e-bike on craggy and bumpy tracks.

Easy E-Biking - Moustache road electric bike dimanche 28.7, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

These e-bikes are also largely conventional in that their prices are really based a lot on battery and motor specifications. The better the motor and battery, the least worries the rider has to put up with when riding through unpredictable terrain. If you want a model that can adapt to a riding habit that is equally erratic, then a smart move would be to choose a customizable model that can add an extra battery to boost range.

You also want a motor that has substantial torque as it translates to how well it can provide support for any kind of rise you encounter. Though, if you really want to use your e-bike to swiftly go through the steepest inclines, it is always best to just choose a mountain e-bike for it.

Also, a good road e-bike should be able to deliver adequate comfort even if you have to go through dirt and rocky roads. Versatility complemented by a satisfactory battery and motor performance is what you need to look for first before regarding any other extra perks.

Notably, certain models are incredibly lightweight as well (such as the two top models we included in the table above). As a rider who frequents rough roads, you want to have as little weight as possible for better handling. Extra features like GPS and a digital display do come in handy as well.

Price of a Typical Cruiser E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good cruiser e-bikes: $2,250 to $4,900.

Sample List of Good Cruiser E-Bikes

Model NamePrice
Soul Fast Sonic Stomper SS$4,895
Specialized Turbo Como 5.0$4,050
MOD BIKES Easy$3,290
CUBE Elly Cruise Hybrid 400$2,999
Magnum Cruiser$2,249

One of the most popular e-bikes now, cruisers are the go-to option for many casual users because they are normally very comfortable to use. Do not expect cruisers to compete with one of the more dynamic e-bikes (like gravel, mountain, and road) when it comes to motor and battery power, but they are certainly no pushovers when it comes to giving you the best casual riding experience.

Easy E-Biking - man e-cycling along sea, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

That said, you want to focus on models that give the most comfort when deciding on a good cruiser e-bike. For this, you better be mindful of factors such as the material used on the seats, as well as how the bike adjusts to your build and gender.

As for the motor and battery, you should really base your decision on whether there are steep hills in your area. You don’t really need a powerful motor if you will just be using the cruiser for leisurely rides in the park or bike lanes in your area. Nonetheless, there are models that really manage to mimic a motorcycle in the amount of motor support they can give.

Cruiser batteries are also not so heavy-duty, so do not be surprised if you find many models with low riding ranges. If you really want a good cruiser, though, it definitely would not hurt to still pay attention to the maximum riding range per charge. That is assuming you do not mind the extra riding time.

A bit more helpful tech features thrown in are welcome as well, but a lot of riders do not really need them. If you find a GPS to be helpful for navigating in a city or area you are unfamiliar with, then, by all means, go for it.

Price of a Typical Commuter E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good commuter e-bikes: $650 to $4,900.

Sample List of Good Commuter E-Bikes

Model NamePrice
BULLS Cross Lite Evo$4,899
OHM Quest$3,399
CUBE Elly Cruise Hybrid 400$2,999
Trek Verve+ 2$2,499
Nakto Camel$650

A bona fide crowd favorite, nothing really beats the casual riding pleasure you can derive from a good commuter e-bike. Part of the reason behind their immense popularity undoubtedly lies in their name. After all, isn’t commuting the top reason why people opt to ride e-bikes (and bikes for that matter)?

Easy E-Biking - woman e-biking city, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

A good commuter e-bike, for this reason, is one that manages to provide the best value for money. You want to be able to capitalize on the affordability of these e-bikes without missing out on the essential e-bike riding experience. Unless you want a couple of perks when riding, you probably can do without the frills you normally see in more purpose-built e-bikes (not that commuter e-bikes do not serve one, mind you).

Of course, getting more riding range is always a good thing. So if you find you can shell out a few more dollars for a model that can give, at least, 50 miles of range, then these are good candidates as well.

This should not be much of a concern if you already have a crystal-clear calculation of the exact distance that you need to travel for your daily commute, though. Obviously, this is assuming that is the sole purpose you will be using a commuter bike.

If you want to go all the way with a commuter, then do not overlook the hybrid models as well. These often manage to provide what many e-bike riders would probably regard as top-notch riding.

You get to enjoy a good riding range (100 miles to be exact), maximum comfort, solid components that guarantee safety – all for the price of what would normally be regarded as just a mid-range electric bike.

Price of a Typical Electric Trike

Stability and adaptability are what you should consider when trying to decide on a good trike e-bike. Will you be using a trike e-bike to fulfill a practical purpose like transport items and people? Or do you simply want to enjoy the stability it offers?

Easy E-Biking - trike electric bicycle, helping to make electric biking

Before buying a trike e-bike, you have to know beforehand that you will be dealing with a lot of weight. This factor is actually one of the primary reasons why the trike e-bikes can’t rival other high-tier e-bikes in terms of price tags. So don’t be surprised if models with a very powerful motor will cost more. And, most of the time, these are what we won’t hesitate to consider as good cargo e-bikes.

After all, they are the ones that can guarantee that they will be able to support the extra weight, which will certainly take a toll on riding range and even speed. It’s for this very reason why models that can achieve respectable speeds and riding ranges are a definite standout. Lastly, not all trike e-bikes offer the same amount of stability, though, so do be mindful of this as well.

Price of a Typical Cargo E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good cargo e-bikes: $1,100 to $5,500.

Sample List of Good Cargo E-bikes

Model NamePrice
Yuba Electric Supermarché$5,500
Tern GSD S00 Folding Bike$4,999
ARGO Cargo Bike Kit$1,099

People want cargo e-bikes that manage to give as much convenience when carrying or delivering items that they need to haul from one point to another. This is why if you want a good cargo bike, you want to pay attention to the motor’s strength, battery life, load capacity, bike weight, and versatility.

Easy E-Biking - cargo e-bike, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

We mentioned versatility because there are models that really exude this. From extra accessories that can fulfill the rider’s needs as they arise to those that can also be folded besides being able to serve as a passenger vehicle, these cargo e-bikes. Obviously, these are the perks that will serve as the prime basis of cost relative to quality.

Be extra mindful of the battery range and, of course, motor power. Those models that do not hold back in these essential parts are our main recommendations. For what purpose are you buying a cargo e-bike? Will you be using it regularly while carrying heavy loads every time? Do you have to go over steep inclines with it as well?

If you answered yes to all the questions, then you will surely need a heavy-duty cargo e-bike. This does not necessarily have to be high-end, and the selections we have listed above are good examples of solid cargo electric bikes.

Read also: How to select the best cargo e-bike (with examples)? And, How much does a good cargo e-bike cost?

It’s not for nothing why a lot of models use dual batteries and have higher top speeds. Cargo electric bikes have to be able to guarantee they will be able to cover the added weight and round-trip rides, after all.

Price of a Typical Folding E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good folding e-bikes: $1,700 to $3,700.

FuroSystems Furo X$2,700

Electric bikes that are solely marketed for being foldable really reveal how riders tend to look for this nifty feature when using this. That said, most foldable e-bikes can be easily bunched into other categories like city, cruiser, and commuter.

Easy E-Biking - folding Peugeot e-bike, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

This is why if we are going to single out a factor that will make a foldable e-bike stand out, it is how it manages to integrate its foldable functionality with other essential factors like battery life and, in this case, weight.

We mentioned weight because riders who opt for foldable e-bikes prefer lightweight models so they can easily carry them around. However, this often immediately means the battery is smaller as well, hence, most models tend to have a low riding range. This is why if you are browsing for good foldable e-bikes, be sure to favor models that can still manage to give you a satisfactory riding range.

These models also do not require too powerful a motor for their purpose of serving as reliable alternatives to commuting. If you want the right level of torque on your e-bike or are looking for a speedy model, then it’s best to avoid foldables altogether.

Read also: How to select the best folding e-bike (with examples)? And, How much does a good foldable e-bike cost?

Considering the smaller tires that these types of e-bikes have, ask for models that won’t have trouble with certain roads as well. And, of course, you also should not miss the maintenance costs of a foldable electric bike. Flat tires are a common occurrence among most e-bikes, but it is arguably all the more so in foldables.

So, we have outlined all the factors (even the disadvantages) that explain why the prices of foldable e-bikes pale in comparison to more first-rate e-bikes out there.

Price of a Typical Junior E-Bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good junior e-bikes: $940 to $2,215.

Model NamePrice
KTM Machina Mini Me 241$2,213
Orbea eMX 24$2,200
Carrera Vengeance E-Junior$933

Junior e-bikes are one of the newer types being introduced to the market. If you want to buy an e-bike for your teen or adolescent (or even seniors), these are your best bet. Same as a kids’ e-bike, you want to go for a model that has features that improve safety.

Easy E-Biking - boy riding e-bike for kids, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Ensure that the frame is just the right size for your kid. If your child tends to ride great distances, it won’t hurt to opt for a model with a GPS tracker. This way, you’ll always have peace of mind whenever he is riding. Of course, this readily means more costs, but it will be well worth it.

Most manufacturers understand that junior e-bikes are simply the bridge to adult-oriented e-bikes, so they do not really mind skimping a bit on the battery and motor. Even so, you still want to have an e-bike with decent battery life. It will not hurt to ask your child how much riding range she wants as well.

However, do not expect these models to have the high-performance batteries found in more conventional e-bikes. You can buy decent models for less than $2,000, though, which is relatively cheap as far as e-bikes go.

Most models do not really need a strong motor because they are mainly designed with leisure in mind. You really should not be disappointed if the e-bike only tops at 15mph because there are safety traffic guidelines that manufacturers need to adhere to per country.

Price of a Typical Kid’s E-bike

Easy Tip: The price range of good e-bikes for children: $250 to $350.

Sample List of Good E-Bikes for Children

Model NamePrice
Razor Pocket Rocket $349.99
Razor E300S Electric Scooterazor Pocket Rocket $299.99
Razor Pocket Mod Euro $299.99
Razor MX350 Dirt Rocket$248.99
HOVER HEART Kids Electric Power Motorcycle$159.99

You probably won’t be surprised to find out that a lot of kids’ e-bikes aren’t as expensive as their adult counterparts. The table above should readily prove this. For your kid, you want something that, first and foremost, goes all the way in promoting safety. That said, your child may not want a bike that lacks speed, though. So as much as possible, be on the lookout for models that can give a balance in safety and speed.

Easy E-Biking - e-motorcycle child , helping to make electric biking practical and fun

For this, you need to pay attention to compartments that ensure safety and stability when riding. Brands usually incorporate special, pneumatic wheels to ensure this, besides other components. We don’t recommend you to choose an e-bike that will sacrifice safety for faster battery charging, though.

The same goes for bikes with longer battery life (though you should not expect most children’s e-bikes to last longer than an hour of straight riding). Be sure to stick to the bike’s recommended age when deciding, too.

Even so, be wary of models that charge too long (especially if your kid has a short fuse and doesn’t want to wait long). Expect to give your child the chance to ride his or her e-bike, at least, once a day. But if you can find models that can charge for 4 to 6 hours only, then they really should be at the top of your list.

Read also: How to select an e-bike for a child? – also in this article. And, How much does a good kid’s e-bike cost?

Razor is pretty much a household name in children’s e-bikes and most of their models are popular. It’s obvious that they really know how to decide kids’ e-bikes for various purposes and tracks, so we wholeheartedly recommend most of their models.

A few words in conclusion

Ultimately, your decision should only be partly based on the factors we outlined above. Do use them liberally to judge an e-bike’s quality, but do not let them overshadow your priority: the purpose of buying an e-bike. Once a model or type fulfills that purpose, wouldn’t it immediately be considered as “good” in your book? Adopting this thinking will only help you pinpoint the right e-bike type to buy anytime as well.
