Accompanying the rising popularity of e-bikes in the US is a surge in interest in e-bike insurance. Unsurprisingly, this is a demand many insurance companies are more than willing to meet.

And this is only proven by the number of companies offering specialized e-bike insurance in the country – a number that is not so marginal as most American e-bike riders would care to think.

If you have been looking to acquire e-bike insurance for your unit, you have come to the right place. You’re probably already aware of the top three that are included here, but if you want all possible (and, more importantly, trustworthy) options currently available, then take the time to read through this entire list.

Do note that not all these companies offer specialized e-bike insurance, especially the more “all-around” insurance companies like State Farm and AmFam.

US E-bike Insurance Companies Comparison Table

Use the following table to get a good overview of what you can expect from each e-bike insurance agency. Most of these companies can provide coverage for essential risks. If you want the exact figures for public liability, accessories coverage, etc., know that most of them are also included in this table.

The table is complemented by a succeeding list that will spotlight each company and give an outline of the exact coverages you can expect from them. Companies are listed in alphabetical order.

1. American Family Insurance

Easy E-Biking - American Family electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

American Family Insurance, or AmFam as it is known colloquially, is similar to State Farm in terms of each reach and appeal to the American public. Founded in 1927, it’s one of the largest insurers in the country. It’s also one of the most lucrative, consistently included among the country’s Fortune 500 companies.

AmFam provides comprehensive insurance for most types of vehicles, but they do not offer a separate e-bike policy. Even so, AmFarm provides additional coverage for e-bikes through their homeowners’ policy. E-bikes can be added to the policy and covered for theft, loss, vandalism, and public liability.

Acquiring and bundling e-bike coverage through AmFam is one good way to save on insurance expenses. Annual costs can be as low as $3, and medical coverage can also be provided by the homeowner’s policy.

The company typically recommends getting an umbrella policy to, at least, get a semblance of how specialized e-bike insurance provides coverage to riders.

2. ISU Insurance Services of Westlake

Easy E-Biking - ISU electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

ISU Insurance Services of Westlake, or ISU for short, operates on a national level and offers a variety of personal and business insurance coverage, some of which are more obscure and uncommon compared to most.

Indeed, it’s quite a pleasant discovery to learn that there is a growing number of insurance services in the US that offer comprehensive coverages for very specific niches like tattoo shops, spas, and, of course, e-bikes.

ISU has been around since 1988 and has continued to make Los Angeles its headquarters. It has established quite an impressive presence nationwide, with over 50 branches in multiple states already operating under its wing.

It provides all types of bicycle shop insurance as well, e-bikes included. And what’s evidently great about the company is that they are all too willing to dive into the intricacies of the user’s needs before suggesting a policy.

However, we do have to assert that the company’s policies are limited to e-bike shop owners and not personal e-bike riders. If you happen to belong to the former group, then ISU may just be able to deliver all the business protection you need.

3. Markel Insurance

Easy E-Biking - Markel electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Markel being included here should practically be a no-brainer because it’s one of the most recognized insurance companies in the US. The fact that the company is the largest featured in this list could be an understatement. It’s been around since the 1930s, a clear testament to the substantial popularity and prestige it has acquired over the years.

Naturally, it has begun offering its dedicated e-bike insurance since it’s been providing bicycle insurance for a long time.

Having acquired such substantial experience over the years, Markel knows how to familiarize itself with the industries it chooses to accommodate. Besides offering specialized insurance for various vehicles and specific types of insurance for individuals and businesses.

If we’re going to look at Markel’s specialized e-bike insurance, it’s almost identical to Spoke’s, which shouldn’t at all be a surprise since Markel American Insurance Company serves as the underwriter of the two. But that’s not to say Spoke is not entirely dependent on Markel because it’s run by Marsh & McLennan Agency.

Markel e-bike insurance policyholders also enjoy the same perks as Spoke customers. Bicycle liability ranges from $25,000 to $100,000, and you can also expect coverage for e-bikes with top speeds of 28 mph and 750-watt motors.

Even the quotes are similar, so you can consider Markel and Spoke as one entity in most cases. However, it’s unclear why the two companies continue to operate independently.

4. McClain Insurance

Easy E-Biking - McClain electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

McClain Insurance is unique in offering e-bike coverage for Pacific Northwest states only. Being based in Everett, Washington, it’s safe to say that McClain Insurance is targeting local riders more, particularly regular commuters in Seattle and Portland.

It was founded in 1977 and is partnered with multiple other insurance companies nationwide. Looking at the overview of its services, it’s safe to say that it’s more of a general insurance company from which you can expect to avail of the basic coverages. It just happens to offer specialized e-bike insurance as well.

And indeed, McClain Insurance has attractive insurance terms for e-bikes. What the insurance policies lack in the number of risks covered, it makes up for in loftier liability compensation limits.

Getting a $500,000 limit of liability coverage is not exactly an everyday thing, at least in the current state of e-bike insurance protection in the US. It may not rival the ones offered in the UK e-bike insurance companies, but it’s undoubtedly one of the highest in the US.

Besides this, you can also avail yourself of necessary property and medical coverage. Interestingly, it’s one of the few e-bike insurers offering underinsured motorist insurance with a $500,000 limit.

Admittedly, it’s a coverage that can appeal to many e-bike riders considering the number of uninsured drivers and other bike riders in the US.

The company does state, though, that it offers “additional customization” of policies based on needs. However, it doesn’t readily reveal what these customizations are.

To find out more, visit the McClain Insurance website.

5. Oyster

Easy E-Biking - Oyster electric bicycle insurance logo - real world, real e-bikes, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Oyster is a relatively new e-bike insurance company striving to revolutionize e-bike insurance. So far, it is the only e-bike insurance company that works directly with e-bike and bike retailers to embed insurance during various stages of the purchasing journey.

Its insurance products are integrated at several bike retailers, such as AventonBulls BikesThe New Wheel.

Importantly, Oyster is a technology-first company with simple and intuitive user interfaces that make everything easy for customers. Trustpilot reviews for Oyster are showing growing customer acceptance of this approach.

6. Prime Insurance

Easy E-Biking - Prime electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Established in 2001 and headquartered in Lakewood, New Jersey, Prime Insurance is one of America’s more traditional insurance companies that quickly recognize the growing trends in numerous industries – and e-bikes have entered its radar, as evidenced by its relatively recent foray into it.

We say “recent” because the company has not yet dedicated a stand-alone category for e-bikes even though it recognizes the need to acquire specialized insurance.

Make no mistake, Prime Insurance offers customizable e-bike coverage; you can refer to the table below to know exactly what they are.

It’s just that it is not as open as other insurance companies in revealing its policy details yet. At best, you can expect them to provide protection for the most prevalent risks and leave you open to including add-ons.

Prime Insurance’s pluses are its historical track record and acclaim won through the years. It’s also willing to flaunt the feedback it has received recently and over the years, so the company speaks for itself.

7. Simple Bike Insurance

Easy E-Biking - Simple Bike electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

For its unassuming name, Virginia-based bike insurance company – Simple Bike Insurance – is a real gem for US electric bike riders because of its relatively more comprehensive and in-depth coverage.

For example, besides the ones listed in the table below, it also throws in coverage for transit and travel damage, spare parts, and vehicle contact (up to $10,000). Another plus is that they provide insurance for all states and even extend their services to Canada.

Every basic policy provides all the needed coverage for essential risks such as damage and theft. But, as in most bike insurance companies, Simple Bike Insurance also gives policyholders plenty of freedom to customize their policies by allowing them to add the other available coverages they provide.

That said, it’s not hard to recommend this company to riders who feel they are paying for too much (or too little) coverage.

The company is also particular regarding the e-bikes it provides insurance for. Motors must not exceed 750 watts, and the top speed must not go beyond 20mph for both pedal-assisted and throttle-assisted models.

Considering the sheer flexibility of the company and its virtually complete line of coverages available, it’s safe to say that Simple Bike Insurance can compete with the best in the market — even Velosurance. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s underwritten by Markel, too.

8. Spoke Insurance

Easy E-Biking - Spoke electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Spoke immediately makes its claim to fame and reputation in the e-bike industry in the US by being the pioneer of e-bike insurance in the company.

Being first also allowed it to establish a firm hold on e-bike insurers in the country. Even as of this writing, Spoke remains one of the almost automatic options by US e-bike riders when protecting their prized possessions.

Spoke Insurance is similar to Velosurance because it is also one of the country’s first to offer comprehensive bicycle insurance.

Coincidentally, it shares the same conception year with the latter, launched in early 2012. Spoke’s immediate pull comes from the fact that it was also established and run by cycling enthusiasts. They know what riders want, and much more so for e-bike riders.

Spoke’s prices start at $100 per year, which is reasonably cheap for a company considered a premium e-bike insurance provider. It also offers deductibles that can go for as low as $200, substantially less than the average homeowner’s policy in the US.

It is also more lenient and flexible regarding its e-bike coverage limitations, which can even provide coverage for models with 28 mph top speeds – this is a rarity for most e-bike insurance providers.

Like Velosurance, policyholders can also freely choose liability protections covering between $25,000 and $100,000. These are some of the reasons Spoke is considered an e-bike insurance company that can give you all you need.

9. State Farm Insurance

Easy E-Biking - StateFarm electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

State Farm provides another reason for Californians to rejoice: it offers e-bike and personal mobility insurance in their state alone. And for the general American public, State Farm is pretty much considered the Swiss Army knife of insurance companies.

The company is already embedded deep in American society and has served an entire generation and the next, for which it has received numerous awards. Its current headquarters is in Bloomington, Illinois.

One inherent appeal of a State Farm policy is that it is generally more inexpensive, and e-bikes are not exempted from this. However, there is admittedly no stand-alone e-bike insurance offered by the company.

At best, e-bike coverage can be provided with the help of a “sports equipment” policy. It will cover essential risks like damage and theft, which can be limited.

Nonetheless, State Farm remains one good way for most e-bike riders to protect their units without taking too much of a toll on their wallets. It can be a practical choice if you have multiple e-bikes to cover the most common risks.

Another perk is that State Farm has good agents who will not hesitate to dive into the intricacies of each policy to help you make claims for your e-bikes.

10. Sundays Insurance

Easy E-Biking - Sundays electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Sundays Insurance is known in the US as a bicycle insurance specialist. They are sure to cover anything bike-related, and what’s good is that it also extends to e-bikes.

The company was founded in Australia in 2008, but fortunately, they already have a global reach. Their US branch is located in Santa Barbara, California.

We also can’t deny that the company knows what bike riders need in their insurance policies. It’s one of the few often-overlooked insurance companies that offer well-rounded insurance with virtually complete coverage for risks.

Sundays Insurance makes three options available for different types of cyclists based on their riding habits.

For serious cyclists, they offer as much as $50,000 in liability coverage, battery insurance, and $10,000 for medical payments. The other two options are for casual riders and those who use their units for endurance training or another form of exercise.

These options alone make it easy to see that the company is made for bikers. You only need to go through the table below to know what we’re talking about.

11. Velosurance

Easy E-Biking - Velosurance electric bike insurance logo, helping to make electric biking practical and fun

Velosurance is one of the most popular e-bike insurance companies in the US, and it’s easy to see why. For one, it has always served as a bicycle insurance company since its founding in 2012.

Additionally, Velosurance primarily caters to professional cyclists, so it knows what the average bike rider wants in an insurance policy for all types of bikes, electrics included.

It also has a no-nonsense way of making the entire insurance process quick and uncomplicated. Its multi-risk coverage can provide e-bike riders with all they want in an insurance policy, eliminating any extra effort and time to get the specific coverage they want.

Indeed, if you want to work with a company that will take care of everything related to e-bike insurance, then Velosurance is your best bet.

Read also: Do you need a license to ride an e-bike? And, Do you need insurance to ride an e-bike?

Velosurance also quickly stands out with its motor limit for coverages, which can go as high as 750 watts.

That is a marginally higher figure since, on average, that limit only tops at 250 watts for many companies, even those that offer specialized e-bike insurance.

Its lofty liability limits that range from $25,000 to $100,000 are also attractive benefits, considering legal costs in the US.

Overall, Velosurance is the e-bike insurance company to beat in the US. It can go toe-to-toe with other well-established insurance companies like Markel and Spoke.

Ultimately, it’s quick to win over many cyclists because it chooses to specialize solely in the said industry and the complete and affordable coverage it offers.

A few words in conclusion

There are not many options yet for Americans as far as e-bike insurance companies are concerned. Many of the companies prefer to offer insurance in specific states only. This could be attributed to the fact that e-bike laws vary in every US state.

Based on popularity alone, Spoke and Velosurance are the overwhelming favorites among most American e-bike riders.

But many other companies mentioned here promote their unique appeal either by catering to local riders or providing cheaper policies with lower premiums and deductibles than the competition.

We also have to admit that e-biking and cycling, in general, in the US are not that popular, at least compared to many European countries.

It’s a good sign, though, that the American public has plenty of options regarding insurance companies that provide specialized policies for e-bikes. Perhaps, it’s only a matter of time before this number will increase.
