It’s no secret that e-bike batteries won’t last forever, but it’s always a bummer when a battery taps out before it needs to. Luckily, there are ways to deal with and prevent these issues, so read on to discover three ways to solve common e-bike battery problems!

Test the Charger

First, don’t assume the worst! Your battery may not be the problem at all—the charger might be the culprit. First, make sure you use the e-bike battery charger. If you’re like many people, your basement is full of chargers, and there’s no guarantee you grabbed the right one for your bike!

Once you know you have the right one, plug your charger into the wall and see whether the indicator lights flash on. If you get nothing, the charger is probably defective, and you should pick up a new one. Also, consider purchasing a voltmeter—this device can tell you whether your charger is putting out power, and it’ll also come in handy for the next step.

Check the Battery

Using the voltmeter mentioned in the previous step, connect the ends to your battery prongs. If you don’t get anything after a few hours of charging your battery, think about when you last used the battery. If it was within the last six months, there’s a chance! Let your battery charge for eight hours and try again—if there’s still no luck, a new battery is the only solution.

Practice Good Battery Care

There are plenty of ways to improve your battery’s lifespan, but the most effective thing you can do is practice good battery care. Remember that you should never leave your battery in extreme temperatures.

Whether it’s a sweltering summer day or a frigid winter night, bring your battery indoors and let it rest at room temperature. If you’re planning to store your battery for a while (the winter season, perhaps), leave it with a 40 to 70 percent charge. At the beginning of each month, check the battery to ensure it hasn’t dropped below 20 percent—if it has, charge it back to the 40 to 70 percent range.

Additionally, refrain from overcharging the battery and letting the charge drop to zero. Both sides of the coin can reduce your battery’s maximum charge for the future and force you to purchase a new battery sooner.

Now that you know these three ways to solve common e-bike battery problems, keep your battery in tip-top shape and enjoy your ride for years to come!
